| Developing the Student Calendar
Three years ago, Chico Unified School District adopted a student calendar that is in its final year (view the current student calendar here). Staff will be making a recommendation to our school board in January 2009, to adopt a new 3 year student calendar, and we are soliciting feedback from all our stakeholders regarding that calendar. We will collect information from both our internal and external communities from now until mid-December. If you are interested in doing so, please take a moment to provide us your opinions at the bottom of the page.
Here are some of the parameters around the student calendar:
· Students must be in school 180 days.
· CUSD must maximize student attendance, for both academic and monetary reasons.
· Approximately 10,000 CUSD students take the state mandated STAR tests each spring, which must occur after about 85% of the school year has been completed.
· For academic reasons, secondary teachers, as well as some students, have expressed a strong preference for having the first semester of the school year end prior to the beginning of Winter Break.
Additional information which may be helpful:
· An analysis of attendance data from 2005-2006, the final year prior to the adoption of the current 3 year calendar, reveals that CUSD student attendance has improved by taking the entire week of Thanksgiving off.
· Chico State and Butte College have adopted similar student calendars with respect to their Spring breaks, which now include March 17th, St. Patricks Day.
